Initiative to help minimise the risk of child abduction through education. The Tae Kwon-Do School of Excellence Kidz n’ Power program covers important safety information in a straight forward, non-threatening way including break away techniques, stranger warning signs, tips to deal with bullies and internet safety precautions.
Child Safety:
• According to the National Centre for the Missing, Exploited Children there will be approximately 58,000 non-family abductions this year.
• There will be over 200,000 family abductions this year.
• 1 out of 5 girls and 1 out of every 10 boys will be sexually abused before they reach adulthood.
• Experts estimate that 60 million adults today were sexually abused when they were children.
• Over 800,000 children will be reported missing this year alone.
Bullying:
• 1 out of 4 kids will be abused by another youth.
• Surveys show 77% of students are bullied mentally, verbally and physically.
• 14% of those bullied said they experienced severe reactions to abuse.
• 8% of students miss 1 day of class per month for fear of bullies.
• 43% fear harassment in the bathroom at school.
• 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.
Additional Research
• Local research suggests that 27% of Bradford pupils have been bullied outside school compared to 20% of non-Bradford pupils. The same research claimed that 1 in 5 Bradford students selected the statement “bullying has made me feel I can’t do things” as applicable to them.
• A questionnaire was sent to 28 secondary schools in the area. Responses were received from only 9. In 4 schools there were majorities stating that bullying was a problem in their school. In 2 schools the majorities said that they did not know whether or not bullying was a problem. Of these 6 schools, 5 had majorities who said that they knew who to turn to for help, but only 1 had a majority who responded to say that they knew whether or not their school had an anti-bulling policy. Out of the 9 schools that responded, 1 school declared that they had conducted a recent survey looking at the issue of bullying. 20 students responded and 17 had said they had been bullied at school. The overall response to the question “is bullying a problem in your school?” was “yes” 47% “no” 17% and “don’t know” 36%. To the question “do you know who to turn to for help?” The response was “yes” 80%, “no” 9% and “don’t know” 11%. This provides some indication that young people know who to turn to for help and yet there is still a bullying problem in some schools.
• 2 results from the survey that were significant are that:
• Bullying is at the top of young peoples concerns, but no 1 organisation had grasped the extent of bullying in the district.
• Reading the 2 together makes it clear that they must be changes in the conduct of the schools.
